| Potential Students I invite you to visit me for a free level assement and a trial lesson. I think that it is important that anyone considering any sort of study should shop around in order to see what program is best for them. Every teacher has his/her own style of teaching, and every student has his/her own way of learning, so it is important that students experiment before deciding on a course of study. New Schedule I have posted my new schedule, which will be valid from May 21st, so please take a look at the All about Bryce section. I have finished up with the International Academy of Business (IAB/МАБ), so I am adding additional classes to the daytime groups. 7th Year in Business As 2012 marks my seventh year in business here - a lucky number in Kazakh tradition - I am giving something back to my students. Every past or present student of mine is eligible to win a free month of study in a program of similar value to the one they had/have (e.g. individual students would get individual lessons, while group students would get group ones). I will be doing this each month for the whole year*. So, if you qualify just send me an e-mail at ttc@caspican.com (subject: "7th Year"), send an SMS to 701-534-0527, or stop by the office. Note that all students who have studied with my since January 2011 (when I relocated offices and began to work alone again) are automatically entered. Winners so far have included Dauren in February, Aigul in March, Natalia in April, and Zukhra in May. * Each student is only eligible to win once. Discount Policy As of October 1, 2011, I raised the discount given for bringing in new students from 5% to 10%, in response to popular demand. I appreciate students assisting me with the marketing of the school, and wish to pass that savings back to you. |

| Dear Potential Clients: | |
| I
really like what I do, and believe that I am bringing value to
Kazakhstan, the U.S. and the world through helping my students realize
their dreams by giving them the most important tool they could have -
English. I think that as globalization continues, English will be the
most important general skill anyone can have. There are many stories of
people who have had really good English language skills getting
positions that others who were more qualified in their specialization
did not. We live in a world of communication, where the ability to get
an idea across to others is the key to success. Many people throughout
history have had thoughts of genius, but their inability to sway others
to their opinions resulted in their failure. My job is to ensure that
my students are able to demonstrate their knowledge and intelligence in
the most important medium ever known to mankind, the English language.
Allow me to be your guide in this. The only person who can help you is yourself. A teacher is only a guide in the journey of achieving your goals. To this end, I specialize in assisting students who want to go abroad for study or work, as well as those who either work at foreign companies operating in Kazakhstan or wish to do so. In general, I am not the teacher for you if you simply wish to study the English language recreationally, or need it only on a limited basis in your work for a local Kazakhstani company. Indeed, this website is purely in English as a sort of test for students who are ready to study with me, since only those with a level of lower-intermediate and above will be able to understand it. I want to work just with students who are driven to excel. I desire to be a gateway for you to find opportunity in the international arena, particularly because Kazakhstan does not offer enough chances for those who want to succeed on their merit alone. This is especially true for those in the sciences, which is the area of study I admire most. Additionally, I also have a great deal of knowledge in the spheres of business and journalism, having worked in both areas myself. Furthermore, as I spent over three years working for an economist, and another three collecting data for an American company that produces worldwide CPIs, I believe that I have quite a bit of knowledge in economics as well. I also like to think that each of my students can, if necessary, work teaching English, as many have done in order to earn extra money while they were abroad. In order to learn more about me, please see my résumé in the All about Bryce section of this site. As I am a serious teacher, I expect my students to be focused too. Therefore, if I assign homework, then students must punctually complete it. They should not miss too much class, and make up any classes that they do not attend. In the case of individual students, those who cancel too many classes will be fired. I know it sounds harsh to talk about dropping students in such a blatant manner, but time is money. As I only get paid when students attend regularly, if I am to continue offering low prices that are affordable to the middle class (my target market), I must maintain stability. Please review the Standard Agreement in the Downloads section, which governs the relationship between us. The Standard Agreement is implied by virtue of this notification; however, I encourage students to sign it, as it demonstrates a true commitment to your studies. I have attempted to make this website comprehensive. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Bryce Combs Co-proprietor and Teacher, TTC |

| Currently Offered Courses Please see Bryce's current Schedule in the All about Bryce section in order to see what classes are being offered now. Should you have questions as to how long a class has already been going on, please feel free to contact me. Just because a class has already started, does not mean that it is too late to join it. There may be some catch-up work to do, but if we are not too far into the semester, everything should be fine. Group Formation: I invite all potential students to visit the school and audit a class, either the group they are thinking of joining or, if a suitable new group has not formed yet, another group of the same level. Even if a group has already started, so long as the semester is not close to the end, it may be possible for a new student to enter the group if he/she agrees to do the necessary makeup work. I start groups with a minimum number of students (usually three), and then rapidly promote them once classes have begun. I believe this system offers the best balance between meeting each student’s desired starting date, and my having a sustainable class with a stable number of students. I only begin charging the students once I am sure that a group has enough students. Contracts: All students are expected to abide by the Standard Agreement, and are encouraged to sign it officially. This document clearly outlines the rights and obligations of both TTC and the student. Also within the contract and addendum are our policies on refunds, discounts, attendance, and testing. At this point in the school’s development, we feel that in order to move ahead as an organization, we need students as serious as we are about achieving a defined set of goals. Please visit to the Downloads section below to find the Standard Agreement and Standard Addendum (you will need MS Word). Should you have further questions on the school’s policies, please contact me. |

| Potential Students: Please see Bryce's current Schedule in the All about Bryce section in order to see what classes are being offered now. There may be some catch-up work to do, but if we are not too far into the semester, everything should be fine. Intermediate/Upper-Intermediate Grammar — A seven– to eight-month course (depending on the speed at which the group can work) that provides students with a strong basis in grammar, as well as its application through interactive conversation with a native speaker. This course utilizes Raymond Murphy’s English Grammar in Use. Students are required to purchase their own course books. Number of Students: 5-7 Upper-Intermediate/Advanced — A seven– to eight-month course (depending on the speed at which the group can work) for students who plan to pursue careers in teaching and/or translation. The focus is on the complex usage of advanced English grammar, as well as its application through interactive conversation with a native speaker. This course utilizes Martin Hewing’s Advanced Grammar in Use. Students are required to purchase their own course books. Number of Students: 5-7 Advanced Conversation: Business — A four-month course that provides the students with the core vocabulary of a specific field of study. Currently, the theme is advanced business English, utilizing Business Vocabulary in Use by Bill Mascull, as well as materials from international business and economics journals. Students are required to purchase their own course books. Number of Students: 5-7 Advanced Conversation: Law — A four-month course that provides the students with the core vocabulary of a specific field of study. Currently, the theme is advanced legal English, utilizing Professional English in Use: Law by Gillian D. Brown and Sally Rice, as well as materials from other law-related sources. Students are required to purchase their own course books. Number of Students: 5-7 Advanced Conversation: Medicine — A four-month course that provides the students with the core vocabulary of a specific field of study. Number of Students: 5-7 Note: Advanced Conversation: Business / Law / Medicine are sometimes combined with each other or with a grammar course to form a six- to eight-month course, depending on the general level of the group. Academic Writing — A four- to five-month course (depending on the speed at which the group can work) that parallels the material for the LCCI Business English Writing Level 2 class, as well as incorporating material from Lin Lougheed’s Business Correspondence: A Guide to Everyday Writing. This course meets one and a half hours twice per week, plus each student has a one-hour individual time each week, which must adhere to my schedule. Number of Students: 5-7 Academic and Business Presentations — A four- to five-month course (depending on the speed at which the group can work) using Presentations in English by Erica J. Williams. This course meets one and a half hours twice per week, plus each student has a one-hour individual time each week, which must adhere to my schedule. Number of Students: 5-7 Business Writing — A four- to five-month course (depending on the speed at which the group can work) using College Writing: From Paragraph to Essay by Dorothy E. Zemach and Lisa A. Rumisek. This course meets one and a half hours twice per week, plus each student has a one-hour individual time each week, which must adhere to my schedule. Number of Students: 5-7 Note: Academic Writing is sometimes combined with Academic & Business Presentations or Business Writing to form a six- to eight-month course, depending on the general level of the group. Furthermore, students in a group can choose to forego the weekly individual sessions in favor of more classtime as a group. TOEFL® — A four- to five-month course (depending on the speed at which the group can work) focused on students who need to intensively prepare for the exam. Mock versions (pbt and ibt) can be taken in my testing area at the students' leisure, so classtime need not be wasted, and a timed mock iBT should be done two weeks after the semester ends. This class meets three times per week, plus students are expected to attend, as much as is possible, Grammar Clubs and English Clubs -- please see the English & Grammar Clubs section. This class utilizes Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL Test by Jolene Gear and Robert Gear, among other materials. Students are required to purchase their own course books. Number of Students: 5-7 IELTS® — A four- to five-month course (depending on the speed at which the group can work) focused on students who need to intensively prepare for the exam. Mock versions can be taken in our testing room at the students' leisure, so classtime need not be wasted, and a timed mock test should be done two weeks after the semester ends. This class meets twice per week, plus students are expected to attend, as much as is possible, Grammar Clubs and English Clubs -- please see the English & Grammar Clubs section. This class utilizes Step Up to IELTS and Action Plan for IELTS, both by Vanessa Jakeman and Clare McDowell. Students are required to purchase their own course books. Number of Students: 5-7 Note: TOEFL and IELTS are sometimes combined to form a six- to eight-month course, depending on the general level of the group. Furthermore, special sections of both classes are sometimes offered, as per the wishes of students, in order to work more intensively on test practice. In such classes, we concentrate entirely on the tests themselves, without doing additional exercises, which can be done at the students' leisure. Individual Study or Mini-Group Study — Please note the Price List. Intensive Study — This service is offered to those students with limited time before traveling abroad or taking on a new job, as well as to companies needing to advance their employees’ levels for professional reasons. The quantity of class time depends on the student’s needs, the plan of the employer (if such is the case), the allotted budget, the ratio of local teacher and native speaker teaching, and so forth. We have experience in raising a student by one level in a three-week period, during which the student has eight hours of class per day, as well as a heavy load of homework each night. We also have had success in breaking through learning blocks, when a student has had some sort of learning barrier (usually a fear of making mistakes). We can apply our knowledge in dealing with your specific needs. |

Lower-Intermediate and above, TOEFL/IELTS, business, and writing |
I am the sole teacher at the school now, following the need to relocate when our former landlord agreed with a larger business to combine our space with theirs. In a way, this is a good thing--a return to the past before I opened the school, when we taught only in the offices of corporate clients. Indeed, I have less stress on me after eliminating the administration of a larger organization than I had ever desired to operate. I can keep class sizes small, and focus more on students without the distraction of the additional administrative duties of managing other teachers and support staff. | ![]() skype ![]() |

| As noted on the schedule, I do not usually teach on Sundays, so as to have time to spend with my daughter, Isabella. Nonetheless, I occassionally agree to teach on Sundays if there is a need, such as students who are preparing for interviews, dealing with applications, or are soon to go abroad. In such cases, to compensate for the travel time to and from the office, classes must be no less than three hours in length, and it is imperative that the students show up for the classtime, as I will charge them anyway. As well, students who fail to arrive at such specially-scheduled classes will lose the right to ever have another dispensation from me again. | |||||||

| Translation & Editing |
| Evolv,
our core business, was started in order to provide translation and
editing services, as well as the provision of language teaching
services to business clients at their offices. We used to do all kinds
of translation and editing, though focused on business, economics and
politics. Since 2007, however, we have changed our direction to the
entertainment and advertising spheres, as we find them more interesting. This change was brought about following the completion of our work on the Eurasian Faces documentary series for ALD Capital Group (now defunct), in association with Kultura, a Russian television station. The series includes the stories of such famous figures in Kazakhstani history as Abai Kunanbayev, Chokan Valikhanov, Mukhamedzhan Tynyshpayev, Kanysh Satpayev and Olzhas Suleimenov. We have since done the translation of other film and television scripts, including documentaries and fiction (Colonel Nodo), as well as of contracts and treatments (A Present for Stalin). We wish to develop our presence in this market. Our current rates are as follows: From Russian to English— Translation by an experienced Russian-speaking translator and editing by a native speaker KZT 7 500 per page / Translation by an experienced Russian-speaking translator KZT 4 500 per page / Editing of a good translation by a native speaker KZT 3 500 per page / Editing of a bad translation by a native speaker KZT 4 500 per page (in all cases, one page is counted as 700 typed words / an acceptable period of time should be allocated for the best possible translation and editing work / rush orders, being more than an average of 10 pages per day, are billed out at a 25% additional charge). |

| Lending Library |
| I
have a library to allow my current and former students and others
interested in studying the English language to take out videos and
other materials. The collection now includes over 1500 licensed video
cassettes and DVDs, audio books, literature, software (only for
temporary installation while checked out of the library), and other
study materials. This is not a video rental location. All those interested in becoming members need to sign a contract (those under 18 years of age must have their parents sign the agreement). There is no longer any monthly membership fee, but fines of KZT 25 per day for each overdue item apply. English language teachers who bring in a letter from their employer proving their status also have free membership, though, of course, they must still fill in and sign the membership agreement. Any income derived from this venture goes toward increasing the library's holdings. I am operating the library as a not-for-profit center. You will find the the Library Services Agreement and the Library Catalogue in the Downloads section. |

| English & Grammar Clubs | |||
| I have revamped my system of Saturday English Clubs. From now on the clubs are divided into two sections as follows*: | |||
| Start Time | Finish Time | Level | Material |
| 11:00 | 12:00 | GMAT (w/ the TOEFL Group) |
Grammar |
| 12:00 | 13:00 | GMAT (w/ the TOEFL Group) | Comprehension |
| 13:00 | 14:00 | Intermediate and Above | TBA |
| 14:00 | 15:00 | Intermediate and Above | TBA |
| *There
are some basic rules regarding English Club attendance: 1) English Clubs are open to all past and present students who have completed at least one semester with me. 2) Groups are limited to ten students, mostly because of a lack of space (with ten being a tight fit as it is). 3) Signing up in advance guarantees a place in the section. 4) Students are limited to one section, unless there are free spaces available on the day of the club. There is also a special Grammar Club (Upper-level -- Wed. 15:00-17:00) and a special Reading and Retelling Club (Upper-level -- Mon. 10:00-12:00). Both open to all present and past students who have completed at least one full semester with me. Furthermore, I accept into our clubs those who do not study in my regular classes, but who wish to have conversation practice with a native speaker. See the Price List for the fee per non-student for each section attended. |

Some people have difficulty finding my office, but I assure you that it is not really much of a problem. If you are traveling along Gogol St., then just turn up Panfilov St., and stop at the building that is on the left just before Aiteki bi St. If you are coming from Furmanov, then turn onto Gogol St. and follow the abovementioned directions, as there is no turning onto Panfilov St. from Gogol St. If you are coming up Ablay Khan St., then I suggest you follow those same directions. However, if you are coming down Ablay Khan St., then you can turn up Aiteki bi St., followed by a left onto Panfilov St. Of course, you can always travel down Panfilov St. from any street after Kalinin St., or up from the Arbat/TSUM area. If you have a real problem finding my office, then you can give me a call, and I will try to clarify the directions. Finally, remember that I always put out the "ugly" green TTC sign at the Panfilov St. entrance to the House of Artists building when I come into the office each day. If you see the sign, then you are in the right place. Once you are in the building, just take the lift up to the sixth floor, where you will see my office door directly opposite (just look for the laser light show). | |
